Treasures from afar

Why is Beer drinking in Haarlem very medieval? And why do these people here drink so much coffee and tea? Oh, and why is it very normal to get a cookie stuffed with nutmeg or star anise?

The main part during the food tour has a focus on the transitional period from medieval city up to the 17th century. The “Golden Age” in which Haarlem became a proud and prosperous city due to the influx of new settlers from all over Europe. It not just attracted new settlers with new ideas and capital, along its way came the beauty and the yummy. Painters and architects had new clientele. And food was spiced up with ingredients from far and away. What are the signs of these times?

New foodies in the city

What is a striking parallel about new Dutch cuisine and the one from the 17th century? Why do Haarlem people think it is quite normal to eat Sushi on a Monday, Lasagne on a Tuesday and Roti on a Wednesday? What is the future of Dutch cuisine?

In the last part of our tour we walk towards modern times, the here and now. We try to make sense in the modern yumminess. On our way there, we’ll visit our locals, have fun and enjoy the sun.

Are you just like me? The foodie, the connaisseur, de fijnproever, der Feinschmecker, yiyecek, le fin gourmet, ruokaa, el entusiasta, 美食家, Měishíjiā, гурман, il buongustaio, la manĝaĵo?
